scorecard and that
Jungle Dave had won the
Open in regulation play. The Playoff was therefore
disallowed and Jungle declared
the winner. 1999 Bag
Open participants were James "CHOP"
Thompson, "Jungle
Dave" Rozsman, Casey
"The Village Idiot"
Meloy, and Larry "Slash and
Burn" Laird. Newcomer Curt
"Lumpy" Byers was
unavailable due to poor planning
on his part. Also missing
is perennial no-show, Jay
"Chicken Legs Alexander.
The Bag
Open Rules Committee met for several
hours after the conclusion of the event
to discuss Lover Boy's actions.
A decision
to censure Chicken Legs was drafted and
unanimously approved. Lumpy's
situation was also reviewed and no
disciplinary action was taken due to his
obvious incompetence.
Hours
after the completion of the 1999 Bag
Open and after an ill advised sudden
death putt-off between Jungle and CHOP
Thompson, it was brought to the
attention of the BO Rules Committee that
irregularities on CHOP's scorecard
negated several strokes from his score
and made Jungle the outright winner.
The
day dawned bright and hazy with a few wispy clouds
circling ominously overhead. The four players teed
it up at 10:20 A.M. Unknown to any of them, this was to
the first Bag Open to go a full 18 holes, after 2
previously unsuccessful attempts at a complete round of
"golf". Jungle made it apparent with his
opening blow that he intended to be in serious contention
for this year's title by pushing his drive some 178 yards
right, narrowly missing the lake bordering hole 1 that is
under normal conditions considered out of play.
Opening then with a wonderful double bogey 6, Jungle
immediately forged a 1 stroke lead over Slash. CHOP
and Village, somehow forgetting themselves, made par 4 and
found themselves trailing by 2 after just 1 hole !
Play continued
through 3 holes with little change in the leader board,
highlighted primarily by CHOP's 210 yard 7 iron play from the
elephant grass miles left of 3 fairway a full 60 yards over 3
green. He compounded his early round errors by then making
par 4 on the hole from that unlikely position. Hole 4, the 233
yard, designated 3 iron par 3 followed, and CHOP continued to
astound by making the putting surface ! He did, however,
regain his senses by 3 kacking it for a fine bogey 4.
Jungle, meanwhile, was all over the place, made an incredible quad
7 and stretched his lead to 4 over Slash and Village and 5 over
the ever grinding CHOP. Both CHOP and Village gained 1 back
on the par 5 fifth hole, Jungle and Slash both going temporarily
insane and making birdie fours. This hole proved to be the
early turning point of the event as Jungle inadvertently teed off
the wrong tee box and skanked his tee ball in the middle of the
lake right (generally considered totally out of play). It
was then discovered that we were indeed on the wrong tee box and
Jungle was allowed a free shot from the Bag tee. If the
initial water ball had been allowed, the tournament would have
effectively been over with Jungle looking at least a double bogey
7 and amassing an insurmountable lead.
During an interlude at
the Pro Shop before beginning the back side, it was
brought to the attention of the field that Jungle was not
imbibing in the generally accepted quantities and a 1 beer
penalty drink was accessed on the J Boy before play could
continue on to hole 10. He reluctantly choked down
the nectar and play was resumed. Discussion also
resumed on permanently banning Chicken Legs Alexander, the
perennial NO-SHOW. Hole number 10 was designated a 5
iron only hole with all shots to be played with that club
including putts.
On it went
through hole 12, Jungle building his lead back to a commanding 4
shots somehow, despite the best efforts of the other 3 Bags.
History was made on number 13 when four tee balls sailed out into
the mist, signaling the beginning of actual completion of 18
full holes of golf. CHOP and Slash went comatose and nailed
tee balls over the lake, Village and Jungle continued to scull
their long wands with gleeful abandon. Slash was unfairly
accessed a birdie 4 on this hole and issued a strong protest which
was quickly over-ruled. CHOP lost it again on 14, making birdie 4
while the others maintained their positions nicely. Village
in particular had become unresponsive and was likely in a coma at
this point. Slash made a valiant effort to get back into it
again on 15 by pull hooking his tee ball deep left into an bean
field that has always been out of bounds. He was, however,
over-ruled again in that new poles had been put into place and had
not yet been marked and he had to play from the beans with no
additional stokes allowed. This ended Slash's run at the 99
title. Number 16 was played in it's entirety (of 452 yards)
with lob wedges all the way. Village clawed his way to a
brilliant 11 with Chop making a very nice 9, Slash carded 8 and
Jungle brought up the rear with 7. This brought about a tie
between Village and Jungle, the first time since number 1 that
Jungle had been challenged! The par 3 17th was played
entirely with drivers, and Jungle regained a 1 stroke lead over
Village with a solid 6. With just 1 to go the trouble
began. A quick check of the card revealed that Jungle led
Village by 1, Chop by 5 and Slash by 6 shots. Chop made a
good move, dumping 2 straight shots into the pond, but it was not
enough, despite some "magic pencil" maneuvering on the
score card as the official card found Jungle a 1 stroke winner.
This was after a ill advised putt-off on the 18th green that was
totally unnecessary. Only Slash and CHOP have yet to taste the
sweetness of victory in the Bag Open. Both promise to be in
better form for the 2000 Open that is tentatively scheduled for
November 18th.
