Tourney Ends in 3 Way Tie, New Bag Inducted |
|
| In
conditions that could only be called brutal, the 2003
Bag Open was reduced to just six holes. Cold,
windy weather, coupled with near freezing rain ended
this years Open early and resulted in a three way tie
for the coveted crown.
And, only three contestants actually showed up as
well, precipitating a dogfight between CHOP
Thompson,
The Village Idiot Meloy, and Slash and Burn
Laird.

| Alexander was again not in the gate for yet another lame
reason. Lumpy Byers, while present at Bushwood this
day, again chose not to shoe up, feeling that the event is
beneath him. The field, reduced to
three, teed off at approximately 11:50 AM on the fierce
Bushwood Black Course, a monster measuring well over 8200
yards. CHOP was provided a 1971 vintage golf ball that had been buried in the
ground for the last 30 years to play with. This was due to the fact that he is
the reigning Bushwood CC club champion and a golfing stud. Slash stunned his fellow competitors with a par on
the opening hole, a tricky 481 yard par four playing into a
strong side wind. Little of note transpired during the next
two holes, both par fours, the second measuring 511 yards
and the third at 492. Again it was Slash that rocked
the group by carrying the green on the par three fourth, a
little gem playing 267 yards uphill.
CHOP played fairly steady
golf with nothing much going on. The Village did finally
strike on the par five fifth, a leisurely 612 yarder.
Faced with appeared to be an impossible fifth shot from
behind the green, the Idiot played a gorgeous shank under
the trees, into the knee high fringe and up onto the green!
He then calmly canned a 16 footer for his bogey.
It was then that the three
contestants decided to shorten the match and head on up
number nine to the clubhouse. Frostbite seemed
imminent, reason prevailed, and the trio trooped on in to
the warmth of the shed. It was then discovered that
there was a three way tie for the crown. As there was
absolutely no way that there was going to be a play-off, it
was further decided to declare tri-champions for 2003. Thus,
Slash and Village now have two titles, while CHOP has
finally won his first, albeit a shared honorific.
New Bag Installed in
stirring ceremony!
In a lovely and touching
ceremony following the tourney, Chris "Cusser"
Boes was installed as the newest Bag and now becomes
eligible for tournament play beginning in 2004. Cusser's biography and swing analysis can be found
