Earle William Laird

Earle William Laird, age 85, of Marion passed away early Saturday morning at Triumph Hospital in Mansfield, Ohio. Born in Dexter, Missouri on December 2, 1921 to Earnest andEarle William Laird Golda (Dickison) Laird, he married the former Ethyl Taylor on October 2, 1945 and she survives at home. Earle served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II. He had been employed by Signal Delivery as a driver and has been retired for almost 20 years. An avid golfer and member of Hickory Grove Golf Club, Earle was also a life member of both V.F.W. Post #3313 and B.P.O.E. #32 and also belonged to Marion Moose Lodge #889 and American Legion Post # 162. He was preceded in death by his twin brother; Pearl “Roger” Laird and 3 other brothers; Edwin, Lloyd and Robert. Along with his wife, he is survived by his 2 sons; Larry (Kathy) Laird of Marion and Stephen (Carol) Laird of Jacksonville, Florida, his sister; Ruthe Laird Cooper of Marion, his 3 grandchildren; Christopher Laird, Jennifer Laird and Phillip (Maggie) Laird and his 2 great-grand- children; Alex and Grady. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Craig F. Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Marion Cemetery where military honors will be observed by the Marion County Joint Veteran’s Council. Friends may call Tuesday from 4-7 PM at the Hughes-Allen Funeral Home who is handling arrangements for his family. Earle Laird passed away peacefully in his sleep early in the morning of December 23rd, 2006.

He had been ill for six months and had endured three major surgeries during that time. Tentative arrangements include visiting hours Tuesday, December 26th with funeral services Wednesday, December 27th.

Earle was the driving force behind the yearly golf trip that came to be known as the Jekyll Island Laird Golf Outing. He enjoyed the company of young and old alike, and was able to relate to people of all generations with his wit, charm and love of his fellow man.
