Earle W. Laird - Golfer
Extraordinaire |
|
| Pictured above is the man
behind the annual Laird Jekyll Island golf
trip. Earle Laird, patriarch of the Laird family of
Marion, Ohio is the father of Larry and Steve Laird.
The yearly, week long
excursion was conceived shortly after Earle retired 20 years
ago as a means for his boys to spend some time with their
dad doing what they all loved to to do, play golf.
Earle has always loved the game as much as any man could,
and introduced his sons to the game when they were just
young boys. Wife and mother, Ethyl was always an avid
golfer as well until rheumatoid arthritis forced her to stop
playing about 10 years ago.
One day after the
completion of this years trip, Earle suffered a heart
attack. As this is being written he is still
recovering and hopefully will be fit enough to attend next
years trip, at which time he will be 83 years old. By
the way, Earle played 36 holes one day during the past
outing and 18 on each of the other five days. |

| Yes, friends, that is a
load of golf. Eighteen holes the first day at Laurel
Island on the way up to Jekyll and then 36 brutal holes for
the next five days. 2003 marked the first trip for Roger
Laird, Earle's (Lord Windersmear) nephew and Larry and
Steve's cousin. Mr. Roger acquitted himself quite
well, surviving all but the final eighteen. Roger was
a bit anxious to get back home because of heavy snow in the
Baltimore area and the fact that he had not actually even
been home since retiring some six months ago.
Also attending were the usuals,
Earle, Larry, Steve, and Phil Laird, along with hanger-ons,
Matt Fletcher, Andy Bratt, and Shad Huffer. This is the
first year the group has been able to muster two complete
foursomes. This assured that some local thrasher might not
be inadvertently be placed in one of the groups.
Weather IFFY again!
The first four days of the
exodus were pretty decent, the lads donning short pants and
generally basking in benign weather. While rain was forecast
for a couple of days, it occurred during the beer drinking
and card playing hours, leaving the light of day for dry
golfing. Saturday was another story altogether. The morning
eighteen may have been played in the coldest weather any of
the troupe had ever endured. This abetted by 15-25
mile and hour winds. Things improved somewhat for the final
day of the expedition, but not enough to put the shorts back
on. |

| Making his
second consecutive appearance at the Jekyll Island Quality
Inn was none other than the talented Todd Gates. The group
welcomed Todd as he again performed his masterful Check-In
routine. Always in complete control, Todd managed to delay
the festivities by hours. |

The lovely and
pale Khrystal Meth was again lurking on the cart paths
plying her wares of $3.00 beer and $1.50 crackers and other
assorted sundries.
Looking as ashen as ever, Krystal once again stole the boy's
hearts. |
