Oops, We Did It Again!

image: Rufino Tamayo, Protesta, 1983“Thus did a handful of rapacious citizens come to control all that was worth controlling in America. Thus was the savage and stupid and entirely inappropriate and unnecessary and humorless American class system created. Honest, industrious, peaceful citizens were classed as bloodsuckers, if they asked to be paid a living wage. And they saw that praise was reserved henceforth for those who devised means of getting paid enormously for committing crimes against which no laws had been passed. Thus, the American dream turned belly up, turned green, bobbed to the scummy surface of cupidity unlimited, filled with gas, went bang in the noonday sun.” ― Kurt Vonnegut, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, 1965

As everybody used to know before The Lobotomies, America has never been invaded. There are no insane axe murderers, drooling rapists, or international terrorists crossing our borders intending to sully the red blood of American citizens - and then go on food stamps and Medicaid for a comfortable retirement. This is an entirely made up narrative by Donald Trump to establish a Nazi-style group of “others” that can be marginalized and ultimately vilified to unify political support behind his leadership. And now, as Trump ramps up the hate speech and his anti-immigrant rhetoric to justify mobilizing military personnel to illegally enter Los Angeles, we are watching his master plan, on behalf of his imaginary master race, unfold. But we all really knew that, didn’t we? (However, the part about hordes of transexuals in public bathroom stalls across the nation must be true...)

Recently, thanks to the Not So Great Dictator formerly known as Donald Trump, life seems to be moving backwards. And sadly, just when we were doing so well. What is going on in America currently is so sloppily derivative that it looks like a ten-year-old boy - profoundly deficient in several fundamental human proficiencies – was given license to write, direct and star in a bumbling and deeply disturbing soap opera that has now overtaken the lives of every citizen and non-citizen living in America. This soap opera is presented to all Americans in daily episodes, each with a discrete theme for Trump and his cast to perform. And each episode begins with a threat that goes something like this: If you don’t let me do this, I’ll ruin you and your family, because “I run the country and the world”. Just look at how he impugned Joe Biden recently, calling him “not the sharpest bulb”. Neurofibrillary tangles aside, Trump can be devastating - a sort of senile Michael Corleone. In assembling Trump’s cabinet, the casting director for The Lobotomies series had only one criterion for putative cabinet candidates: never contemplate invoking the 25th Amendment. Once that hurdle was cleared and NDAs were signed, it was finally showtime. And a veritable symphony of gleeful thumbs in the national eye commenced: RFK, Jr. got to play himself – a thumb in the eye of all Democrats and particularly Kennedy aficionados; Pete Hegseth and his tattoos got to act on some of his worst instincts drunk – a thumb in the eye of America’s vaunted military leaders; Linda McMahon finally got to home school America’s children – a thumb in the eye of anyone who claims that our children are our future. And so forth.

Just over half of our current slew of eligible voters were the mutton-headed numbskulls who gleefully voted for Donald Trump - the buffoon that the evil genius, Steve Bannon, once characterized as “the Rain-Man of nationalism”. They were the voters who gave us a Baby Hitler, mostly, for what appears to be shits and giggles. But many of these dictator enthusiasts were the usual suspects: venal Republicans who thought that Trump would make them personally rich with tax cuts, even though they weren’t rich and were, in fact, barely scraping by.

And, of course, now “It’s 10 minutes to Wapner.”

Was Donald Trump’s election really a clarion call to deliver America to a reanimated white supremacy, to a mid-20th Century fascism delivered by jack-booted thugs? Nah. But on “Day One” Trump began assembling his first Gestapo anyway when he pardoned his January 6th co-conspirators. He issued full commutations and pardons to those indicted and/or sentenced who had participated in the attack, including specifically granting clemency for nine members of the Oath Keepers and five members of the Proud Boys. Since June 2022, The Proud Boys have been involved in nearly 70 anti-LGBTQ incidents alone – impressive résumés, indeed. And now Trump has full control of ICE with over 8,500 employees, including over 6,100 deportation officers.

“In January, 1937, Hitler’s Gestapo only counted for 1700 officers in the entire Third Reich, but their numbers grew every month. Three months later (in March, 1937), it had around 6500 men. That’s still not many — one Gestapo officer for every 10,000 German citizens. In September, 1941, the Gestapo had 15,000 people at its disposal … and that number peaked in January, 1944, when it reached 31,000 Gestapo”.- “The Third Reich’s Political Police” - Marcin Przegiętka, February 2, 2024.

Was Trump’s election a yearning to exchange our Constitution - our national aspiration of tolerance in a multicultural world - with the ignorance and superstition of the Christian Evangelical movement? Well, partly. But the idiocy of this marginally educated, ancient man-boy, was empowered and foisted upon us thanks to the Supreme Court’s ruling on Donald Trump vs The United States on July 1, 2024. It was conceived in absolute certainty by our theocratic Supreme Court – a court only somewhat less terrifying than the equivalent institution in The Islamic Republic of Iran. Shave off the beard and remove the turban, and the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei of Iran has the same smug and mirthless stare as Justice Samuel Alito. But Trump is a thespian and a bad actor, not a divinely chosen Supreme Leader, and certainly not a king. And thespian though he is, Donald Trump can only continue his performance if our nation remains in thrall of his illusion.

This weekend Donald Trump’s Military Parade on the streets of Washington, DC should be a whopper of an episode. There is absolutely nothing like an enormous display of marching soldiers, tanks, fighter jets and a thrilling speech by Donald Trump to honor himself and scare the bejesus out of the rest of the world. It will be a veritable “Triumph of the Will” much like in 1934, when Hitler celebrated the Nazi Party Congress in Nuremberg. It was a rally that was attended by more than 700,000 Nazi supporters.

The entire hemisphere of North and South America - plus Greenland - is praying for rain tomorrow.

Donald Trump - this indecent plague of a human being - must not be permitted to continue to lead our nation. He will destroy our country. He will destroy us. He must be removed from office. And all Republicans who continue to lend their support to this fascist regime must be labeled as the collaborators that they are.

Never Again
